Frequently asked questions
Common questions about tree surgery, costs, permissions and what to expect when you work with us.
Do I need permission to cut down a tree?
It depends. If the tree is in a conservation area or covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), you will need permission from your local council before carrying out any work. We can advise you on this and handle the application process if needed. For trees not covered by a TPO or conservation area, you are generally free to carry out work on your own land.
How much does tree removal cost?
The cost varies depending on the size and location of the tree, access to the site, and how the waste is disposed of. A small garden tree might cost a few hundred pounds, while a large tree close to buildings could be significantly more. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after a site visit so you know exactly what to expect — no hidden costs.
When is the best time of year to prune trees?
Most deciduous trees are best pruned during the dormant season (late autumn to early spring) when the tree is not actively growing. However, dead, dangerous or diseased branches can be removed at any time of year. Some species such as cherry and plum are best pruned in summer to reduce the risk of disease. We can advise on the ideal timing for your specific trees.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Arbor Landscapes carries full public liability insurance. We are happy to provide a copy of our certificate of insurance on request. This covers any accidental damage to property and third-party injury during our work.
Do you remove the waste after the job?
Yes, unless you tell us otherwise. We clear all brash, timber and debris from site as part of the job. If you would like to keep the logs for firewood or the woodchip for mulch, just let us know and we will leave them neatly stacked for you.
Can you work on trees near power lines?
Yes. We are experienced in working close to overhead power lines and follow strict safety protocols. In some cases, we may need to coordinate with the electricity network operator to arrange a temporary disconnection. We handle all of this as part of the job.
What areas do you cover?
We are based in Cirencester and cover the whole of Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, including Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud, Tetbury, Swindon, Malmesbury, Oxford, Witney, Burford and all surrounding areas. We also travel further afield for larger projects — just get in touch to check.
How long does a typical job take?
It depends on the scope of work. A straightforward tree pruning might take a few hours, while a large tree removal or site clearance could take a full day or more. We will give you a clear estimate of the time involved when we quote for the work.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. If you have a dangerous tree or storm damage that needs urgent attention, call us on 01285 644109 or 07787 532911. We will do our best to attend as quickly as possible, and always prioritise situations where there is a risk to safety or property.
What qualifications do your team have?
Our arborists hold NPTC (National Proficiency Tests Council) certificates in chainsaw use, tree climbing and aerial rescue. We follow current industry best practice guidelines and are committed to carrying out all work safely and to a high standard.
